Selling Our House: Surrender to Surprise!

So…we are really going to put this surrender idea into practice. Or at least we are going to give ourselves the opportunity to practice. We are putting our house up for sale. And we have no idea what we are going to do when it sells.

It’s an adventure—kind of exciting, a little scary, a definite opportunity to surrender to the surprise of what may come to us for living space, what we might decide, what we will learn about ourselves along the way. As I look at my living room, I wonder what do I really need. What will go with us, what will be given away or sold, what might we tuck away in storage until we know more decisively what we will do.

We just know this isn’t the place we want to be forever. And it seems like the right time. Why wait? We’ve been tossing the idea around for about three years. And we aren’t getting any younger. The amount of work that needs to be done on the house and yard–all that house maintenance stuff–seems to be taking us away from enjoying the present moment and doing what brings us joy. We have so much more to give (and to live) by not staying in this house.

Coming to this decision hasn’t happened over night. We’ve tossed it around, tabled it, brought it back up, did the pros and cons analysis. It comes down to two issues: we don’t need this much space or this much stuff. We can do with a lot less and it will be an interesting experiment to see how we react to doing with less. And secondly, we don’t want to take care of so much stuff. It takes time that we would rather be doing something that uses our gifts and talents for something beyond ourselves.

For me—planning and leading retreats, writing, creating and continuing to see what surprise SoulFully You will bring. For Joe—more time to relax and give his body a break. He’s worked so hard with extra jobs and does the bulk of the work around the house…this will give him the time to explore what will bring him joy and to find his passion.

It really is about just observing ourselves and seeing how we react to this change. It sounds great in theory. We’ve sat with this decision for a few weeks now, but today I’m feeling overwhelmed by the action steps–the actual packing, cleaning, getting rid of. I’m more reflective now than I thought I would be. I watch Joe packing things up, motivated to clean the clutter. But perhaps my role is to document our journey for this day and another day I will pack the boxes.

All I know is that it feels right to let go of an attachment to this house, our things, our way of life…just to see what is in store for us. It’s an adventure that we can go through together.

God dwells within us. We are home wherever we are connected with our Source. Trusting ourselves, trusting God is our great adventure.
